Fun workshops to learn civic values

In early May, 43 students from the Centre of Excellence and Education through Sport (CEES) participated in several workshops led by the Soualigan Slangs association as part of the Languages, Arts and Cultures Festival (FLAC). The objective: to learn to "work as a team to solve challenges" and to "cultivate differences" to progress.

In line with the festival's theme, "At the crossroads of global citizens, let's cultivate our universality," the workshops, organized like a mini-Olympics of board games, brought together teams of four students, from 6th to 3rd grade. Each group had to complete various collaborative challenges to win cards representing important civic values in sport, as in daily life. With these cards, students collected island emblems which they then had to use to create a collective art piece. "Through this small artistic presentation, we want to encourage them to reflect on sport, culture, and the citizens they are," explains Kamila Hyman, a sports educator at CEES.

Blindfolded obstacle courses, guided only by a teammate's voice; the perfect circle challenge, where an object must be passed without using hands; or building the tallest possible structure with simple wooden sticks: these were all activities where cohesion and listening were essential. After some initial distraction, the competitive spirit and enjoyment of the game quickly took over the student-athletes. This choice of activities was far from insignificant for CEES, which sees board games as a reflection of sports values: respect for rules, team spirit, active listening, and the joy of playing, all essential for developing young athletes.
