On February 9, 15 student-athletes from the Center for Excellence and Education through Sport (CEES) in Saint Martin had the opportunity to meet Jacob Brown, a former NFL (National Football League) player turned speaker, who came to share tips for personal development to help them thrive in their sports.
“I want to be more confident and stronger in my sport,” begins one young boy. “I don’t want to have any regrets after a loss,” adds another. On Monday morning, the young student-athletes at Soualiga Middle School learned how to set achievable goals and to treat them as certainties, not just possibilities.
The Practice of Manifestation: From Intention to Action
Among the various workshops led by Jacob Brown, students were asked to write a letter to themselves six months from now, in which they describe the goals they would like to have achieved by August 2026. These exercises fall under what is known in personal development as “manifestation,” an increasingly popular practice taught by Jacob Brown. The former Oakland Raiders player became a coach and author in the field of personal development following several career changes. His advice is based on a mantra: “fail forward.” His own failures led him to participate in three TED Talks (international conferences, ed.) and to serve as a coach for multinational companies such as Meta and LinkedIn.
The students emerged from their morning of discussions and workshops with the phrase “rest and manifest” (rest and set your goals) in mind; according to CEES Executive Director Charles-Henri Palvair, the first word is one of the most important. Addressing the young athletic talents, he emphasized the necessity of rest when aiming for the highest level: “If you don’t learn that rest is more important than training, you’ll never shine.” Jacob Brown, who volunteered to meet with the young people of Saint Martin at the initiative of the CEES and with the support of its partners, also spoke to the students’ parents on Monday evening to help them best support their children in their quest for success and athletic well-being.
