Three students from the Saint Martin Territorial Sports Center (CST) sailing club flew to Fort-de-France last Thursday to take part in the Schœlcher International Sailing Week in Martinique. This high-level dinghy sailing competition, which brings together 150 sailors from the Caribbean and Europe, began on Saturday and will end tomorrow, with the results announced at 6 p.m.
Accompanied by two young sailors from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club and their coach Sam Peeks, the three CST students will sail solo for several hours each day. This internationally renowned regatta could enable 15-year-old Clément Le Normand-Carré to earn points to qualify for the French championships in his category this summer. Last year, he returned from Martinique with a gold medal around his neck.
On the eve of departure, Clément says he feels calm: "I'm not stressed at all. To tell you the truth, I haven't even packed my bag yet." Last year, he "got off to a really bad start" at the beginning of the race, but he has fond memories of his comeback: "I was fourth on the second day of the race, second on the penultimate day, and then I managed to climb back up. (...) That's what a great victory is all about, improving as the regatta progresses and then winning." Once again this year, he is aiming for the top step of the podium.
Alongside him, two younger members of the CST, Adam Gumbs, 12, and Saül Claus-Laroche, 10, are competing in Optimist classes in different categories. Outside the CST, Stanley Haes, 11, also represents Saint Martin at the Saint Barth Yacht Club. Now we can only hope that the wind will be favorable and accompany their efforts toward great performances. _DR
